Cordele, GA, April News has just been received here that Thomas J. Slade, Jr. formerly deputy sheriff of Crisp County and connected with one of the prominent families of the county, was shot and killed by Policeman Matthews, at Oakfield, a small town about sixteen miles south of this city, in the northern part of Worth county, today at 4 o'clock. It has not been learned what was the cause of the trouble and Oakfield cannot be reached tonight by telephone. Slade is survived by a mother and two brothers.3

     Emily married Jeremiah Zachariah Slade, son of William Slade and Margaret Ann Sutton, circa 1868.3,5,6 Emily died on December 17, 1918 in Georgia at age 66.3,5 She was buried in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia, same stone as J. Z. Slade.5
