Nathan Dupre Slade
(25 January 1884 - 28 August 1952)
Nathan Dupre Slade was known as Dupree. He was born on January 25, 1884 in Marion County, Mississippi.1,2 He was the son of Seborn Slade and Melviny Bond.
Nathan married first Ada Bond on May 31, 1906 in Lamar County, Mississippi.3
Nathan married Artemisa Bond on July 24, 1910 in Mississippi.4 Nathan Dupre Slade was registered in the draft for World War I on September 12, 1918 in Purvis, Lamar County, Mississippi.1 Nathan died on August 28, 1952 at age 682 and was buried in Tyner Cemetery at Clear Branch Church, Lamar County, Mississippi.2 NOTE: about Nathan Dupree Slade
In late December of 1943 Frances Azilene Redmond Bond died at the home of her daughter Velma LeDoux in Bogulusa, Louisiana. Nicknamed Lennie, she was the youngest daughter of the eleven children of George Washington Redmond and Ainsley Canzada Ainsworth, born in 1854, two years younger than my great-great-grandfather Jefferson Davis Redmond. Her mother died not long after and George Redmond married Martha Windham Stringer in 1860 and the family is found living near Handsboro. George Redmond, 63, is a laborer and at home are Martha, age 41, daughters Eliza Anne, 21 and Neicy, 15, son Jeff, 8 and Frances, age 6. A year later, on the eve of the Civil War, Eliza would marry Cephus Bond from Harrison county and they moved to a farm near Pass Christian.
Various records show his name as Cephus, Seaborn, Seaforth and Seaphus. He was the son of Mississippi pioneer John Bond Jr. who was a Captain in the War of 1812 and served at the Battle of New Orleans. He was also a signer of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit the intiated the removal of the Choctaws from Mississippi. Cephus's mother was John Bond's third wife Sarah Ann Terrell Largent and he was the younger brother of Andrew Jackson Bond who married Eliza Anne Redmond's older sister Elizabeth Jane in 1859. Confederate records indicate Cephus enlisted as a Confederate soldier in the first rush to war, October 8, 1861 at Pass Christian, Mississippi. As part of Company H, 3rd Mississipi Infantry "Dahlgren Guards" and served in coastal Mississippi, Louisiana and near Vicksburg. The unit was ordered northward and he was wounded and taken prisoner of war at Franklin, Tennessee on December 4, 1864. He was transferred from Franklin, Tennessee to Louisville, Kentucky, and from Louisville, Kentucky to Camp Chase, Ohio. Next Cephus was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland and released on 9 June 1865, after taking the oath of Allegiance to the United States Government. On 14 June 1865, Cephus was sent from the Provost Marshal General, Washington, D. C. to Harrison County, Mississippi. Even though records indicate that transportation was furnished for the trip to Mississippi, family legend states that the money was not provided and that Cephus walked (or rode) the entire way home. Cephus never recovered from the Civil War wounds and remained in poor health; taking his life with a shotgun in about 1906. But he was apparently reasonably vigorous in that he would father eighteen children with two wives.
Eliza Anne and Cephus would have seven children over the next 15 years and she died in 1875, possibly in childbirth with Samuel Bond, or there is a family rumor of a spider bite. In 1879, Cephus married his wife's youngest sister in Perry county, Mississippi and they settled on a farm in Columbia, Mississippi. Twenty-three-year-old Frances managed a household that included six of her nieces and nephews, as well as two of her own children ages 4 and 6 months.
Over the next twenty years, she would give birth to nine more children by Cephus. In 1900, their farm in Marion county had 63-year-old Cephus, Frances at age 46 and children, son John Preston, 18, daughters Lela, 16, Mary, 14, twins Ada, Ida, 10, Artemisia, 8, Hattie, 6, Velma 5, George, 2.
After Cephus's death in 1909, the family moved to Purvis and on the 1910 Census, 18-year-old Artemisia is still at home with sister Velma and brother George. Also residing with them is Edna Slade, 2-year-old daughter of one of Frances' twin daughters Ada, who had married Nathan Dupree Slade in 1906. Ada died in 1909, the year after Edna Lucille was born. Ada is buried in Corinth Cemetery in Lumberton Mississippi. The epitath on her stone reads, "A dear little twin of Ida Bond. Sleep on little sister and take thy rest." Younger sister Artemisia emulated her mother and married her Ada's widower in 1910. They had one child, Calvin Clennie Slade, who was born in 1923 and all three are found living on Richburg Avenue in Purvis in the 1940 Census.
The 1930 Census shows widow Frances A. Bond owning her own house worth about $500 in Purvis and no radio. Living with her is her youngest son, George Washington Bond, called "Wash", who is a public works laborer. In an interesting coincidence, she lives only 2 houses over from laundress Daisy Ratliff, who would later be defended in a notorious court case 25 years later by her grandniece Pearl Redmond's husband, my grandfather Jesse W. Shanks Sr. The 1940 Census shows daughter Hattie married Harvey Stewart and lived on Gamble Street in Purvis, where she supported their large family as a seamstress in a sewing project. Not far away on Richburg Avenue is Artie and Dupree Slade, Calvin. Ida Bond married William C. Davis and they also lived on a farm near Purvis with children Annie and Vernon. Lela Bond married John Cook and they farmed near Highway 24 in Sumrall and had children Kate, Roscoe, Rosa, Vonnie and Helen. John Preston Bond married Bessie and they farmed in Stone county. They had children Iola, Bertha, John Jr., Cleo, Ruby, Bernice and Mary Alice. Velma Bond LeDoux who was living in Louisiana at the time of her mother's death would follow her only three years later in 1946.
Frances Azzilene Redmond Bond died in December of 1943 and is buried in Coal Town Cemetery just outside Purvis, Mississippi with her husband and many of her close family nearby. Her tombstone has her birth as October of 1851, although most records show it to be three years later.
