SLADE, DANIEL E. - A beloved father, grandfather and brother, he died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at his home in Baton Rouge after a courageous battle with cancer. Daniel Slade was born on May 16, 1830 in Marion County, Mississippi.1 He was the son of Hezekiah Slade and Helena Victoria Taylor.
Daniel married Sarah Baxter. Soon after he married, Daniel started the first well digging in the area. Several of the wells were still in service 100 years later. He joined the Confederate States Army and served as a member of Captain Green's Company, 3rd Mississippi Regiment, 7th Battalion. He was apparently discharged due to medical illness. By the end of the Civil War, he was on Saddle Island making saddles. They cut their own wood, made their iron rings and tanned hides. That is how Saddle Island between Lumberton and Purvis got its name.2 Daniel died on June 25, 1889 at age 59.1 He was buried in Corinth Cemetery, Lamar County, Mississippi.
