Samuel Joseph Slade

Samuel Joseph Slade was born on April 29, 1854 in Jones County, Georgia.1,2 He was the son of Joseph H. Slade and Elizabeth M. Dumas. Samuel Joseph Slade was New Tag in April, 1855 in Louisiana.3
Samuel married Nancy Irene Bruton, daughter of Dr. William D. M. Bruton and Mary Ann Thompson, on January 19, 1880 in Union Parish, Louisiana.4 About 1893, Sam moved his family to Rosebud, Texas where Will, Josephine and Jesse were born.
In September, 1903, the firm of Slade & Watson took out permit to erect four large one story brick buildings with glass fronts to be situated on the SW half of 600 Block on Polk Street in Amarillo, Texas. Sam had been successful raising wheat and also in the oil business.5 In July, 1904, S. J. Slade was one of the group of 12 people who submitted a proposal to buy the land for the Potter County Courthouse.6 Peter E. Boesen from Iowa published "The Daily Panhandle" and "Weekly Herald" 1907-1910 operating from the "Slade Building" at 616 Polk.7 Samuel died on June 9, 1924 in Amarillo, Texas, at age 708,9 and was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Rosebud, Falls County, Texas.9 His obituary in the Amarillo newspaper read:
S J Slade to be buried today at Rosebud, Texas S. J. Slade who died here Monday afternoon after a brief illness will be buried this evening in the family burying ground at his former home Rosebud Texas. His body was shipped from here last evening to Rosebud after funeral services had been held at the family home at 1300 Harrison street.10

While living in Little Rock she was a member of South Highland Baptist Church. Mrs. Samples had the 6 to 9 year old Sunday School Department for 35 years. She loved to tell felt-a-graph stories about the bible to the children and enjoyed working with her classes. When she moved to Nacogdoches she became a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church where she was active until her illness. She enjoyed writing poetry and had a great sense of humor. She enjoyed most being with her children and working with the church.2
