Private Slade entered the service 15 Feb 1918 and was attached to Co F, 8th Battalion, 20th Engineers, American University, Washington, D.C. He embarked for overseas March 1, 1918.2 Vernon Ellis Slade contracted pneumonia which resulted in his death in France on September 1, 1918 at age 26. He was buried in Plot B, Row 4, Grave 39 at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France. There is also a tombstone for him at Fincher Cemetery, Pike County, Georgia inscribed:
     Vernon Ellis Slade 1893-1918 Who gave his life for his country in France. When we shall wake I am quite sure we shall be ever glad that for a while he made us sad.3,4
