Linda Carol Slade

     Linda Carol Slade was born on August 10, 1956 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.1,2 She was the daughter of Oscar Elmer Slade Jr. and Carol Knight. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi in 1978. At Ole Miss she majored in political science and journalism and was an officer of Delta Delta Delta sorority. In 1981, she graduated from the Ole Miss Law School, where she was a member of the Moot Court board and the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. During college, she worked as a part-time journalist for the Meridian Star.

Ms. Slade worked as a staff attorney with the Mississippi state senate and was a legislative assistant for U.S. Congressman Trent Lott in Washington, D.C. She then begame Sen. Thad Cochran's senior legislative assistant until 1989, when she became Congressional liaison and staff counsel for NASA at the Stennis Space Center.

In 2000, she was awarded the Exceptional Service Medal, one of NASA's most prestigious awards for exemplary service, as well as various special act and service awards every year from 1999-2004.

Ms. Slade was active as an alumnae of Ole Miss, and was a past president of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Alumni Association. She enjoyed reading, science, politics, traveling with her parents and the activities of her nieces, nephew and goddaughter. She was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church.2 Linda died on February 17, 2005 at age 48.1 She was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Lauderdale County, Mississippi.2 Her obituary read as follows:

MERIDIAN - Services for Linda Carol Slade, 48, of Diamondhead, who died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Jeff Anderson Regional Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church.

Ms. Slade was a NASA attorney. She was born in Meridian in 1956, and was educated in the Meridian school system, graduating with highest honors from Meridian High School in 1974. Slade and his wife, Shelby, of Meridian; three nieces, Allison Beckham and Aubrey Beckham, both of Greenwood, and Sarah Slade of Meridian; one nephew, John Slade of Meridian; a goddaughter, Sydney Barrett of Tyler, Texas; and two uncles, Dempsey G. Knight Jr. of Jackson and Charles E. Knight and his wife, Charla, of Poplarville.

The Rev. Jimmy Harrison and the Very Rev. M.L. Agnew will officiate at the services.

Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Jim Andrews, Len Shannon, David Scott, the Rev. David Johnson, Randy Robinson, Rex Buffington and Ken Humah.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 this evening and from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the church.

Barham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Tug McGraw Brain Cancer Research Foundation, the Central United Methodist Church Organ Fund or the Make A Wish Foundation.2
